Infected Sickle Cell Medical Concept

Sickle cell disease (SCD) is a genetic disorder that affects the red blood cells, which are responsible for carrying oxygen throughout the body. This condition is inherited in an autosomal recessive manner, meaning that both parents must pass on the abnormal gene for a child to develop the disease. The sickle-shaped red blood cells can get stuck in small blood vessels, leading to blockages and causing pain, tissue damage, and other complications. Additionally, the lifespan of sickle cells is shorter than that of normal red blood cells, leading to a chronic shortage of red blood cells, a condition known as anemia.
